# Free Gumroad Alternative: Sell From Your Own Site

> Gumroad takes 10% + 50¢ of every direct sale. Sell on your own domain, check out through your own payment account, and keep every dollar the provider doesn't.

## Who this is for

You already have a site, a few hundred readers and one thing to sell: a preset pack, a template, an ebook, a membership. You want a buy button on your own domain this week.

You'd also rather not hand a slice of every sale to the platform hosting it. This post shows what that looks like, and what it doesn't do.

## "10% + $0.50 per transaction"

That's the headline number on Gumroad's own pricing page, checked on 2026-10-21. It applies to sales through your profile or a direct link. Sales that arrive through Gumroad's Discover marketplace cost 30% instead.

Gumroad charges no monthly fee. What you pay for is a hosted page, a checkout and, if you want it, an audience browsing Discover.

The alternative is plainer. Your store lives at `/market` on your own domain, checkout runs on your own payment account, and every order is written to your own database.

## The two columns

| | Gumroad | Your store in BoringPush |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | $0, no monthly fee | $0, on the server you already run |
| Fee per direct sale | 10% + $0.50 | Your payment provider's fee only |
| Their marketplace | 30% per sale | Not applicable |
| Address | gumroad.com/yourprofile | yourdomain.com/market |
| Product and order records | Their database | Yours |
| Sales tax | Check Gumroad's own pages | Yours to arrange with your payment provider |

The Gumroad column comes from [gumroad.com/pricing](https://gumroad.com/pricing). BoringPush doesn't take a cut: checkout runs on your own account, and the only fee is your payment provider's.

## What you get

**A shelf.** Your products appear on a page on your own domain. Each card shows an image, a price and a buy button, and the ones a visitor already owns are marked. With no image, a card gets a tidy coloured tile with the product's initials, so an empty shelf never looks broken.

**A way to list things.** A form in your dashboard takes a title, a price, a description, one-time or recurring, and the page a purchase unlocks. You can also list from the terminal.

**Your choice of payment account.** Stripe, Dodo Payments or Lemon Squeezy, behind one checkout. You connect the account you already use.

**Orders you own.** When a customer pays, the order is saved in your database with the amount, the buyer and the provider. Your sales dashboard adds them up.

## What happens when someone clicks Buy

1. They sign in, then click buy. Not signed in? They're sent to sign in first.
2. They pay on your payment provider's own page.
3. The provider tells your app, and your app checks the message is genuine before it believes it.
4. The order is saved, and the buyer can open the page their product unlocks.

If the provider sends the same message twice, which happens, the order is saved once. Your sales numbers stay honest.

## List one from the terminal

```bash
bp products create \
  --title "Night presets, 12 files" \
  --price-cents 2900 \
  --description "For Lightroom and RAW exports" \
  --yes
```

Then read the money back:

```bash
bp products list
bp orders list
```

You see the id, amount, status and buyer for each order. Only an admin can list products, so a visitor can never add one.

## Know this first

BoringPush gives a buyer access to a page, such as your members area. It doesn't host and deliver files, so what sits behind that page is yours to decide.

Buying needs an account, so there's no guest checkout for a product. Sales tax is yours to arrange with your payment provider, and Gumroad's pages are where to check what it does for sellers. Its Discover marketplace is also a real source of buyers: if most of your sales come from there, its 30% buys traffic you can't easily find elsewhere.

## Why BoringPush is the way to do this

A platform that takes a cut of every sale is a landlord. Your own store is a shop you own.

You keep the customer list, the order history and the whole sale, minus your payment provider's fee. And it's the same app that runs your sign-in, your analytics and your jobs, not one more login to maintain.

## FAQ

### Does BoringPush take a percentage of my sales?

No. Checkout runs on the Stripe, Dodo Payments or Lemon Squeezy account you connect. What you pay is whatever your payment provider charges.

### Do I need to write code to list a product?

No. Your dashboard has a form for the title, price, description and the page a purchase opens. The terminal command does the same for people who live in a shell.

### What does the buyer actually get?

Access. Each product names a page, such as a members area or a URL you choose, and a buyer with a completed order gets through. What sits on that page is yours.

### What happens when a payment message arrives twice?

The order is saved once. A retry from the provider doesn't create a second sale or inflate your revenue.

### Can a buyer pay without an account?

Not for a product in your store. They need to be signed in, and if they aren't, they're sent to sign in first.
